A historic talk about North Wales, it is about the Old Marine Semaphore Telegraphs from Liverpool to Holyhead. This talk has been created and will be presented by local historian and photographer John Lawson-Reay at our now usual venue, the Llandudno Junction Community Club.

The Young Storyteller of Wales 2017
Competition and Workshops
Saturday – 12:40 – 21:00 – Llandudno
Inviting Young Storytellers living in Wales or of Welsh descent to tell traditional stories (no longer than 5 minutes) in Welsh, English or bilingually.
No experience is necessary and there is no entry fee. Storytellers may perform as individuals, in a pair, or a group of three.
All competitors will be judged by our judges in one of 3 age categories: 7 to 11; 12 to 14; or 15 to 18 years old.
Prizes will be awarded to winners in all age categories. The winner over 15 years old will become Young Storyteller of Wales 2017
This year, Venue Cymru is teaming up with the Young Storyteller of Wales Competition Team to bring an exciting day of free storytelling workshops and competitions. To inspire local young people, we are offering free beginners storytelling sessions with professional storyteller and previous winner of YSoW Bethan Mascarenhas.
Bethan Mascarenhas is an award-winning storyteller who works both nationally and internationally. Armed with a performance degree from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Bethan has been marrying her skills of storytelling and Drama together, to create performances and workshops for schools all over the UK. She is engaging, warm and has a hypnotic way of bringing the audience into the world of the performance. She brings a modern day twist to old tales.
As part of this exciting workshop pupils will have a chance to explore traditional stories, using voice, movement and performance. They will learn how to tell a short story, to hold an audience and can develop a performance for the competition. You will have an entire day of storytelling workshops to offer to your pupils and it is on a first come, first serve basis – so reserve your day now!

Workshop Leaders & Storytellers
Eric Maddern is a storyteller, musician and author who has lived in Snowdonia for over 30 years. He is the co-creator of the renowned eco-retreat centre Cae Mabon and author of ‘Snowdonia Folk Tales’.
In his workshop you can develop and polish your storytelling skills, working with stories from lovely North Wales.
His workshop will be in English.
Sian Miriam is a bright new star on the Welsh language storytelling scene. An accomplished singer, composer and musician, her skills were in high demand for performances at this year’s National Eisteddfod, held in her Anglesey homeland. She is a member of performance group Cywion Cranogwen.
Sian’s workshop will explore what happens when storytelling and music get together.
Her workshop will be bilingual.
Fiona Collins & Ed Fisher have together written and illustrated four folktale books. Fiona is a storyteller. She is very proud to be Patron of Venue Cymru’s Story Circle /Cylch Stori. Ed is a fourth-generation artist and illustrator from North Wales. In their workshop you can imagine and draw the pictures you see in your mind when you listen to a story.
Their workshop will be bilingual.
Andy Harrop Smith has been a long standing storyteller involved with Festival at the Edge. In Andy’s workshop we will be developing storytelling skills, if you are competing – bring your story along to practice for the competition.
Peter Stevenson is a storyteller, author and illustrator. He has published many books for adults and children, including ‘Welsh Folk Tales’ for the History Press. He is curator of the Aberystwyth Storytelling Festival, works with musicians and uses his own drawings to add life to his storytelling shows. Peter is passionate about encouraging the new generation of storytellers.
Angharad Wynne is a storyteller and poet who co-leads weeklong storywalks in Wales’ most mythical places. She is the creative consultant for some of Wales’ best-known music stars including Bryn Terfel, Catrin Finch and 9Bach, and a director of Beyond the Border Storytelling Festival. Angharad’s first language is Welsh.
