Conwy Classical Music Festival
Saturday 21st – Saturday 28th – Conwy
As you will see from the programme, the festival once again draws on the rich vein of talent which we have here in North Wales, as well as featuring established artists from further afield.
Evening concerts will include a scintillating programme of works by Britten, Bottesni and Beethoven – The three B’s! – from The Festival Orchestra under the direction of Paul Barritt, permanent guest leader of the Halle Orchestra and an opera evening given by some of the cream of Wales’ young singers with appearances at Glyndenbourne and many other prestigious venues to their credit.
Our own Town Orchestra , under the baton of Rosie Hearn, will also contribute to the evening concert series, opening the festival with a programme of works by Beethoven, Vivaldi and Dvorak. Early music will represented by a concert from The Marian Consort, who specialize in vocal music of the Renaissance and who are often to be heard on Radio 3. In this, their tenth anniversary year, they return with a line up of ten singers to delight their fans once again with a programme of music on the theme “Miserere”, including Allegri’s immortal setting of this text. Chamber concerts by the Manchester Ensemble, with works by Britten, Mozart and Mendelssohn and by Ensemble Cymru, featuring Mozart, Glinka and Beethoven, will also be on offer. A recital of music for the unusual combination of violin and guitar fro Michael Bochmann and Adam Khan and an authentic Welsh evening with the Bro Aled Male Voice Choir, soprano Carly Owen , Bass Steffan Lloyd Owen and Harpist Dylan Cernyw complete the evening line up.
Lunchtime concerts at 1pm will feature some of the best vocal talent that North Wales can provide, including Erin Gwyn Rossington, Ryan Davies, Sian Wyn Gibson and John Ieuan Jones. Instrumentalists taking the stage at lunctimes will be pianists Christina Mason-Scheuermann, Annette Bryn Parri, Elizabeth Rossiter and Catherine Barnett, cellist Tim Lowe and the Fitzsimmon Ensemble from Manchester. Local choir Amici del Canto will close the lunchtime concert series on the final Saturday, with a programme of music and readings commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the end of World War I.
Morning concerts by some of the talented teenage members of St Mary’s own choir and by Key Strings, a lecture by Trystan Lewis on the role that Tonic Sol-fa played in the development of the Welsh choral tradition, a choral workshop with the Marian Consort, and a Festival Evensong complete the line-up.
The festival is dedicated to providing opportunities for the local community and visitors alike to enjoy quality music in beautiful surroundings. It is one of the largest music events in Wales to be funded solely by audience donations and sponsorship – there are no set admission charges – ensuring that the festival is totally accessible and inclusive. Please do join us. You will be made very welcome.
