Gig H a’r Band
Saturday – 8pm – Bangor – Pontio
‘Bangor and its environs was one of Edward H Dafis’ strongholds in the early 1970s and was an important part of the circuit of college gigs that the band played at regularly during that decade. There is a reference to Bangor students in one of the group’s earliest songs, ‘Cân y Stiwdants’ ;
“Wyt ti wedi bod ym Mangor, mewn trwy’r ‘Foltie’ mas trwy’r ‘Glôb’?
Tonight through an invitation by UMCB and Pontio they’ll be performing in Theatr Bryn Terfel!
Rhoi d’arian i John Bull, mae wrth ei fodd, bodd, bodd…” ‘H’ a’r Band was formed in 2013 by Cleif ‘H’ Harpwood, main vocalist of the 1970s iconic Welsh band, Edward H. Dafis. At that time the band consisted of four original members of Edward H Dafis, Hefin Elis, Charles Britton, John Griffiths and Cleif himself. Dewi Pws Morris, the fifth member of Edward H, decided to embark on his own musical quest, and is now playing the banjo in a brewery in Nefyn.
Sadly , John, the faithful bass guitarist, died suddenly in 2018 and so only three of the original Edward H will appear on the Pontio stage. But H a’r Band has four other members, Wyn Pearson playing the guitar, Pwyll ap Siôn playing the keyboard and Elain Llwyd and Glesni Fflur providing vocals.
The band travels the length and breadth of Wales presenting music from the seventies to audiences of all ages, principally the work of Edward H from the five albums and singles, a catalogue including favourites such as ‘Ysbryd y Nos’, ‘Mistar Duw’, ‘Pishyn’ and ‘Breuddwyd Roc a Rôl’.
Enjoy a night of the sounds of the 70s and the ‘Hen Ffordd Gymreig o fyw’.
Bu Bangor a’r cyffiniau yn un o gadarnleoedd Edward H Dafis ar ddechrau’r 1970au ac yn rhan bwysig o’r gylchdaith o gigs coleg yr arferai’r band chwarae’n gyson yn ystod y degawd hwnnw. Mae ‘na gyfeiriad at fyfyrwyr Bangor yn un o ganeuon cynharaf y grwp, ‘Cân y Stiwdants’;
“Wyt ti wedi bod ym Mangor mewn trwy’r ‘Foltie’ mas trwy’r ‘Glôb’?
Heno drwy wahoddiad UMCB a Pontio byddent yn perfformio ar lwyfan Theatr Bryn Terfel!
Ffurfiwyd y ‘H’ a’r band’ yn 2013 gan Cleif ‘H’ Harpwood prif leisydd band Cymraeg eiconig y 1970au Edward H Dafis. Bryd hynny, roedd y band yn cynnwys pedwar o aelodau gwreiddiol Edward H Dafis, sef Hefin Elis, Charles Britton, John Griffiths a Cleif ei hun.
Er mawr tristwch, bu farw John y gitarydd bâs ffyddlon yn sydyn yn 2018 ac felly dim ond tri o’r Edward H gwreiddiol fydd yn ymddangos ar lwyfan Pontio. Ond mae gan H a’r band bedwar aelod arall, sef Wyn Pearson ar gitar, Pwyll ap Siôn ar yr allweddellau ac Elain Llwyd a Glesni Fflur yn lleisio.
Noson wrth eich bodd yn sŵn y 1970au a’r ‘Hen Ffordd Gymreig o fyw’!
