Veterans Shed UK

Sometimes all we need is companionship in the darkest places and they appear to be brighter.

It is with this mentality that Veterans Shed UK  have taken the Men’s Shed idea and brought it one step forward providing help and support for veterans. The shed has for an age often been a place for men to find calm and comfort and quiet from the outside world, a world in and of itself, of creation and mending. The only problem with this is that men are often alone in coping with their worries and stress. With the concept of a man shed that Veterans Shed have used, this is no longer an issue.

In order to understand what Veterans Shed do you must first know what a man’s shed is. The concept originated from Australia in order to help isolation in retired men. Although there are charities to help in this matter, research shows that men are unlikely to accept the help. Gradually the idea spread to Ireland  – there now being 200, and there are now 14 sheds in Wales (Veterans shed being one of them).

The Veterans Shed takes part in the local community –  from making a garden shed for a senior citizen to setting up a golf team in Conwy armed forces charity golf competition. They also provide an open ear to the tales and pains of veterans. They accept people of all ages from someone who’s completed basic training and people still serving and anything in between – anyone is welcome.

Here in Colwyn Bay the shed members meet up every Wednesday and as long as you are  things It is a great tool to help oneself but yet you do not have to be alone in doing so if you should choose. If you are a member of the Services or a past service member, why don’t you come and see what veterans shed is all about? –  you never know it might be what you’re looking for.

If you’re not a veteran or currently serving in the forces don’t worry there are a number of different men’s sheds all across the country –  why not look into where your local men’s shed group is situated  -they can be a great help in combating loneliness and isolation.

A Sweet Gesture

A sweet pea gesture, actually! At this time of the year, prize-winning gardener Allan Evans, a horticulturalist from Llandudno Junction, would normally be staking his claim to Gold and Sliver prizes at the Royal Welsh Show for his speciality – sweet peas. COVID 19 put paid to all that for 2020 but a chance conversation […]
