Telling the Rotary Story

On Tuesday, 13th October, Llandudno Rotary hosted a talk by Dave King, Editor of “Rotary” magazine.

In all, 14 members plus a further 11 visitors from 8 other Rotary Clubs in the Wirral and North Wales were delighted to hear Dave deliver a master-class talk on “Telling the Rotary Story”.

The five takeaway points were:

1 Trust is all; If Rotary were not trusted, there could be no message to give that would be listened to

  1. This century has seen a revolution in media technology. Social media, the internet and advances in computer software between them have put power in the hands of people at ground level – i.e. in the hands of those generating the activity, as opposed to media institutions. Rotary (and every other organisation) is now the gate-keeper, not the media mogul
  2. This brings responsibility; it is now down to Rotary to define its own audience and to tell the story in its own way. As everyone else is also clamouring to tell their story, we are competing
  3. Every Club needs a media strategy and a sharing of the tasks involved, i.e. a need to “up their game”, employ more media outlets, more people involved in operating them and to develop ever-increasing levels of sophistication in the way the message is delivered
  4. Some things are timeless – it is always best to assume the reader/viewer knows little or nothing about Rotary, and that it is not Rotary itself that is interesting, it’s what Rotary does that reaches out to people – there’s the need to keep it simple
